A Massive, Mysterious Hole Has Opened Up in Antarctica and Experts Can’t Explain It

A massive and mysterious hole has appeared on the surface of Antarctica. This confused experts since they couldn’t explain what lead to the formation (1). The hole is actually is as big as the state of Maine, with an area of 30,000 square miles.

Some experts blame the appearance of this hole on the climate change. But no one is actually sure what is the reason behind this.

A professor at the Mississauga Campus at the University of Toronto, Kent Moore, the Atmospheric physicist said that this gigantic hole looks as someone punched a hole in the ice.

However, you should know that something like this doesn’t appear for the first time on Antarctica. This appearance is known as a polynya. It was seen for the first time around the 1970’s. But it disappeared for a couple of decades before showing up again.

This is something which really confused scientists. According to Dr. Torge Martin of the GEOMAR Research Division, back then the scientists have just launched the first satellites which provided pictures of the sea ice cover from space.

Dr.Torge Martin explains that the on-site measurements require significant efforts and are limited.

This big hole was discovered by a group of scientists of the SOCOM project, i.e., Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling and the University of Toronto.

These scientists were monitoring the area with the help of satellite technology. They did this because a similar hole opened up on Antarctica in the last years. However, this hole is actually the largest one yet, with an area of approximately 30,000 square miles.

According to a physics professor at the University of Toronto, Kent Moore, it is astonishing that this hole went away for 4 decades and then came back.

Many people blame climate change for the appearance of these gigantic holes. You should know that the climate change is a leading culprit for many changes noticed on Antarctica in the last years.

But, scientists have to do more research on this topic in order to link the appearance of massive holes with the climate change.

The scientists from the SOCOM project are doing a study on this hole, with the hope that they will get some answers.
